Unfinished bird houses are built with bare wood on all sides (no topical finish), and are ready for your final touch. There is no finish applied to the external or internal wooden surfaces. Some common woods used are cedar and pine. No sanding or preparation is needed.
Benefits of Unfinished Wood
One of the benefits of an unfinished model is that you can choose any topical finish application you like according to your specific desire. Some bird species are attracted to natural colors and shades, while others are attracted to bright colors. It's up to you, and that's the benefit of an unfinished bird structure. Finish solutions can be chosen according to the surrounding environment so that it blends with nature and is more appealing to a bird's natural instincts. But if you're just looking to have fun, then you can certainly do that too. Unfinished models come complete right out of the box and ready for paint and/or stain. It's your choice.
The types of wood that are commonly use are variations of cedar and pine. Other woods that are good for bird structures are maple, birch, fir, cypress, barnwood and a few others. We rarely use treated wood, but we sometimes use plywood only for special projects made from discarded wood. Wood is so versatile that it can be used for indoor projects and outdoor projects. There's a lot you can do with wood. Wood can be carved, cut, drilled, sanded, and there's no telling what it will look like in the end. And when it comes to a home for birds, it's sure to look beautiful and natural.

Unfinished designs can be rustic, or smooth sanded and ready for your artistic touch. They typically have no paint or stain applied to the surface and are completely free of chemicals inside and out.
Wooden bird houses are a popular choice among bird enthusiasts because wood is an abundant material in nature. Birds like to hang out in residential yards of many homes across America, and home owners want to accommodate them, especially songbirds. Wood is the most widely used material for bird house construction since birds are naturally familiar with it. It's all about being natural, and natural solid wood has a profound impact on how we feel. It's the best material for wild birds.
